Summer Slump

Summer is a difficult time to keep children busy. With school out of session there are so many opportunities to be active and keep your child's language flowing. I know with our busy schedules, it is a challenge to find time to take your children on trips or send them outside to play; it is easy to turn on the tv, video games, or hand over the tablet to keep them occupied. Research has shown that screen time has a direct impact on language; with increased screen time comes fewer words, leading to an expressive language delay. The time children are spending on a tablet or in front of the tv is time where no language is being used. Set a goal for yourself to spend two hours a day, 45 minutes a day, or however much time your schedule allows, sitting with your child and talking, taking them for a walk and talking about what you see, going for a ride in the car and talking about where you are going or what you see out the window. Language is key to success. If we can build a strong foundation for our children's language now, their future will be much brighter and one day they will be thanking you for taking them on trips or playing outside with them instead of handing them the tablet. So this summer be hands on for language and hands off the electronics.
